Market Update - August 11, 2023: Sensex Drops 300 Points; Media and Pharma Stocks Decline

The stock market experienced a drop of 300 points on August 11, 2023. Sectors like media and pharmaceuticals saw a decline in their stock prices. However, the Nifty PSU Bank index managed to gain 2%, making it one of the only two sectors to see growth.

1. ITC's Focus on FMCG for Growth

ITC Limited, a diversified company, is aiming for growth in its Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) business. FMCG includes products like packaged foods, toiletries, and household items that people use regularly. ITC's various brands in this sector have an annual consumer spending of about Rs 29,000 crore (which is a lot of money spent by consumers). The company plans to create a modern and strong range of products for the future. Right now, they have more than 25 different brands.

2. Expanding FMCG Business

ITC is not just focusing on India – their FMCG products are being sold in other countries too. They see a lot of potential for growth because more and more people are earning higher incomes. The head of ITC, Sanjiv Puri, spoke about their plans at a meeting. He said that the market for FMCG is huge, worth USD five trillion. This means there's a big opportunity for ITC to do well in this business.

3. Hotels and Tourism

ITC is also into the hotel business. They want to make it a separate company so it can grow better. They believe that with more people traveling and visiting places, their hotels can do well. Right now, they have 120 hotels, and most of them are managed by the company.

4. Cigarette Business and Agri-Value Chain

ITC is known for its cigarette business too. They are making new kinds of cigarettes and selling them. Since the government's rules about taxes on cigarettes have become steady, more people are buying them. ITC is also connected to farming – they have a project that helps farmers' organizations. By 2030, they want to help around 4000 such groups.
